General information about the compute server at the RRZN

According to the guidlines of the DFG (German Research Society), universities should provide basic computing infrastructure for institutes at their given location.  At the computing centre, computer should be provided to meet the demand for high CPU-performance or large memory resources.  In this manner one can meet the basic needs of the university.  Furthermore, computers with particularly high performance should be provided, which are to cover the regional (and wider) peak demand from many universities.

The setup at the RRZN fits into the DFG guidelines with its 3-level-model:

  • Level 1: workstations are available in public terminal rooms for use as personal work areas.  This allows users to have access to computer equipment in the case that they have no other access.
  • Level 2: the RRZN compute servers help to cover the local and regional demand for  high performance computing power.
  • Level 3: the multi-regional "High performance computer, north" (HLRN; Hochleistungsrechner Nord) is a high performance computer shared between complexes in Hannover and Berlin, and is deployed for large computing projects from five of the northern German states and Berlin.

As part of the RRZN compute servers we also include here system for special tasks such as visualisation as well as servers for various other more general tasks.

We also offer consulting when one wishes to choose an appropriate system for computing or when using a special piece of software.  Our consultants can help with the preparation and implementation of projects on the RRZN compute servers as well as for large projects for the HLRN system.  As necessary, please contact our consulting team[translate and link].Fachberatung.
