Advice on file systems

Next to the HOME file system--which is available on the cluster system--exist extra file systems for specific purposes.  The HOME file system is used to keep batch scripts, programs and final simulation results so that the files lie on a permanent file system.  Scratch files, checkpoint and intermediate results files should be kept in the work file system BIGWORK.  Temporary files can also be put into the TMPDIR file system which is only local to the computer on which the files are stored.  HOME and BIGWORK, however, are globally accessible.  Which file system you use depends a great deal upon what you wish to do.
